1962 SHELBY AC COBRA
IN 1962, CARROL SHELBY ORDERED EIGHT DISTINCT SPECIFICATION CARS FROM AC, PURPOSELY TO BE USED AS RACE CARS. SIX OF THE SERIES WERE FINISHED BY SHELBY AMERICAN IN VENICE CALIFORNIA. THE FIRST TWO RAN AT LE MANS IN JUNE WITH HARDTOPS, WHILE THE NEXT THREE WERE PAINTED BLACK AND RACED BY SHELBY AMERICAN IN USRRC/SCCA RACES IN 1963. THE LAST THREE CARS WERE SOLD TO PRIVATEER RACING TEAMS.
CSX2156 WAS ORDERED AND SOLD TO PRIVATEER GEORGE CONSTANTINE, DELIVERED TO DRIVER GEORGE BUTLER IN NY, AND IMMEDIATELY SHIPPED TO THE BAHAMAS FOR THE NASSAU SPEED WEEK RACES IN NOVEMBER 1963. BUTLER FINISHED 1ST IN GT GOVERNOR’S TROPHY RACE AND THEN 7TH O/A AT DAYTONA CONTINENTAL IN FEB 1964. THE CAR WAS LATER INVITED TO AARC IN 1971, (2NDB/P AND ROOKIW OF THE YEAR) AND 72’, WHILE OWNED BY GORDON MEFFERT.
IT THEN RACED YEARLY IN THE SCCA NORTHWEST, MID-ATLANTIC, CENTRAL AND MIDWEST REGIONS BETWEEN 1964 & 1995. FROM 1980 TO NOW, IT HAS BEEN VINTAGE RACED BY VARIOUS OWNERS. THE MOST RECENT OWNERS WERE THE DISTINGUISHED, SANDRA AND JIM MCNEIL. CSX 2156’S CURRENT OWNER IS HONORED TO HAVE SELECTED BY THEM AS IT’S NEXT CUSTODIAN, MR. KURT UZBAY
